At each stage, they find themselves in a state of challenge and conflict between their desires, responsibilities, and personal values. In childhood, they are reckless and willing to pursue their desires without thinking about the consequences. In youth, they become more cautious but still struggle to resist temptations; once they follow their desires, they become prisoners of themselves.
