This was a wonderful movie, it got you to care about the characters and I really enjoyed it. In the beginning it was being told as part of flashback which was confusing at first, but luckily that stopped about half-way through. While the ending wasn't really a happy one, it did leave you with a sense of hope, and that was probably the best to hope for in this case.
